Prior to joining Cohen Cleary P.C., Attorney Shawn M. Masterson was the founder and managing partner of a boutique law firm in Providence, Rhode Island.  Over the last 20 years, his practice has concentrated in the areas of Civil Litigation with a focus on Creditors’ Rights, Bankruptcy, and Real Estate.  It was the interplay between and among legal issues in Bankruptcy and Real Estate which led Attorney Masterson into developing a concentration in Family Law within Rhode Island and Massachusetts. 

Shawn is licensed to practice in the State and Federal Courts of Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Vermont.

Throughout his career, he has successfully represented clients in the Appellate Courts of Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut as well as the Bankruptcy Appellate Panels Panel and the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.

Shawn earned an undergraduate degree in Economics from Lehigh University, where he was a member of the Varsity Cross-Country and Track and Field teams, and his graduate degree in Economics from Wichita State University.  He obtained his law degree from University of Massachusetts School of Law at Dartmouth where he was the Valedictorian and recipient of the Academic Achievement Award and West Outstanding Scholastic Achievement Award.  Shawn was part of the law school’s evening program, enabling him to work full-time in hotel management. 

Shawn is a firm believer in giving back to the community.  He has been a past board member of the Providence/Warwick Convention and Visitors Bureau, a current member of the Board of Appeals for the Town of Hopkinton, Massachusetts, a volunteer coach for youth basketball and lacrosse programs and regularly provides pro bono legal services to victims of domestic violence.

Shawn resides in Hopkinton, Massachusetts with his family.   Outside of the office, he is a competitive marathoner and ballroom dancer.
